As far as I can see, all Spacing options are affected, not only specified steps. It also occurs with objects that are not inside of other (closed) paths. Isolation mode seems to be crucial to trigger the problem sometimes, although it also may happen in non-isolated mode. Pretty weird and probably not easy to fix.

Valencygraphics, as per your description and as also shown in your video, I can reproduce the misbehaviour in Illustrator 29.8.1. I'd say it is obviously a bug.

It doesn't explain the connecting/disconnecting issue, but I believe you are probably referring to Illustrator 8 (late nineties) or even older versions. Illustrator 8 was the last version that had only main layers in the Layers palette (sublayers were introduced in Illustrator 9). Also, as far as I remember, in Illustrator 8 no detailed object listing was displayed in the Layers palette. So, this may at least explain your confusion about how layers are structured nowadays. You can, by the way, turn on the "Show Layers Only" option in the panel options of the Layers panel.

As already indicated, it's pretty easy. 1. Draw a spiral with the Spiral tool, for example: 2. Take the Reshape tool (by default it's a bit hidden in the tool group where the Scale tool and the Shear tool are located). Then drag the rightmost endpoint of the spiral to the right or wherever you want. I'm not familiar with wind machines and don't know if there are specific rules for the notation of wind sequences. Or if it is rather about some rough guide for improvisations. You may clarify that, so one can think about other approaches.

If you want something not too clean (like a pattern brush), but also do not want to use the Pen tool, the Curvature tool or the Pencil tool (which of course are appropriate tools in this case) , you may do another approach by drawing a spiral and then take the Reshape tool to extend the spiral and get some clean but also irregular scrawls (see example below, wind some moments before Harmonica shoots Frank). Not sure if it may be useful in conjunction with a wind machine, but you may try it.

It's possible with an action. The target layer has to have a dummy object with a note that can be called to activate that layer. Then, with Paste Remembers Layer turned off, pasting or pasting the clipboard in front should do it.

In Illustrator 29.8.1 I can still see the center mark as per your latest description. In the screenshot below the grey triangles are a group that is moved towards the yellow circle. When the centre of the group meets the centre of the circle, smart guides are saying "Centre" ("Mitte" in the screenshot). Isn't that what you're looking for? Can you show your smart guides settings?

When aligning objects with the Align panel, you can set one object as the reference by clicking on it again after you've selected two or more objects. The reference object will then get highlighted, so you know what the reference is. Is that what you're looking for? Also, keep in mind that in the Align panel there are some options to control different kinds of alignments (Align to Artboard, Align to Selection, Align to Key Object). If that is not what you want, please clarify a bit.

I think I do understand your general request behind the sample case: You are looking for some kind of selective Expand Appearance command that does not flatten all appearance attributes. Instead only selected attributes should be expanded. That could be pretty useful and I certainly would appreciate it as well. But I can imagine that technically it is not easy to implement. Therefore, at least at the moment, you will have to rely on workarounds like the symbol route.

As far as I understand, you may convert the original object (with all its live appearance attributes) to a symbol, then apply the Transform effect to the symbol. Now you can expand appearance, break the link to the symbol instances and ungroup a couple of times. All duplicates should still have the attributes of the original object.

Probably you were referring to a specific layer structure. If you want to achieve it without relying on that structure (that is, all objects are on the same layer), you may copy move a stack of (ungrouped) objects with Object menu > Transform > Transform Each command.

I can reproduce it when modifying your step 3 to only isolate the group, but not the entire clipping group. Step 3 should be: Double-click and then double-click again to go inside the group that is clipped. Yes, then I can see the misbehaviour as described in your initial post.

Obviously some kind of fad has been introduced in the Illustrator forum: Merging topics that *may* be related. Whoever (from Adobe staff, as far as I can see?) thinks it's a good idea to merge threads that just *possibly* belong together: Please think about it twice or better yet three times before you merge them. The circles left to the last vertical row have an additional blend mode (Darken) applied to their fills (see Appearance panel). It should work as expected if you remove the Darken mode.
